On Thursday, September 16, Hartwick College welcomes Dr. Krishna Kant Shukla, who will

give a talk titled “Spiritual Ecology: The Indian Village as a Model of Sustainability.” The talk, part of 2010-11 Consumption campus theme activities, will be held at 7 p.m. in Eaton Lounge on the second floor of Bresee Hall on the Hartwick College campus.
Shukla also will present a free concert of North Indian devotional music from the Hindu and Muslim (Sufi) traditions on Saturday, September 18 at 7 p.m. in Shineman Chapel House on the Hartwick College campus. Both events are free and open to the public.
Shukla is a musician, scientist, writer, poet, and philosopher. After obtaining an M.S. and Ph.D. in solid state physics at the State University of New York at Buffalo, he taught physics and astronomy as an assistant professor at Hartwick College, but eventually decided to quit academics to study Indian classical music in rural India.
Shukla says, “My extensive forays into Indian villages over the past 15 years slowly revealed to me more than just the folk music I was seeking. It dawned on me that village India, its rhythm, way of life, and, most importantly, its ‘world view’ holds much of the medicine that the modern ‘scientific,’ ‘developed’ urban world needs.”
Shukla has given several acclaimed performances in India and abroad, and is an empanelled artist with the ICCR (Indian Council of Cultural Relations). In 2003, he toured the U.S. and gave 39 memorable concerts spanning 13 states.
