SOCIAL AWARENESS & SENSITIVITY CAMP 2010

Bharatiya Vidya Bhawan’s Mehta Vidyalaya organized a two week long Social Awareness and Sensitivity camp for the students of class XI. On the Inaugural function, Principal Mrs. Rekha Sharma acknowledged the students with the fact that we live in a time which is best and worst. Best because of the ongoing development and worst because of mindless violence and exploitation. She told the students the importance of being socially aware, having a particular goal in life and also having a positive attitude. She motivated the students by saying that the power lies within us and we just need to work harder and put efforts to achieve our goals in life. She concluded with a thoughtful line that “Inventions are not accidents, they are the rewards of the continuous efforts”.
The first day started with the session on “Risk taking behaviour in Adolescents” which was taken by Mrs. Anu Singh (Expert NIE)In the next session, Mrs. Madhu Sharma ( career counselor) guided the students as to how to choose a career and be successful.
On the second day, students interacted with Philosopher and author Dr.Krishnakanth Shukla who abrested the students about nature, God and environment. He encouraged the students to help “Save our environment”. He focused on the importance of cycling to save our environment from the upcoming Disaster.The day ended with a visit to Indira Gandhi National Art Gallery .
The third day started with a session on “Dealing with Aggression by eminent NIE expert Mrs. Vandana Tandon. She interacted with students and discussed various reasons of aggression and also how to deal with it. This was followed by a movie called “Pursuit of Happiness” which depicted. a true story about a man called Chris Gardener, who had big dreams and worked harder to achieve his goals in life.
On the fourth day, students enjoyed the session on “Indian way of life – Yoga” taken by school yoga expert, Shri. Sheshpal Rastogi who advised them to practice yoga regularly to stay fit and De-stressed.It was later followed by a session on “Destressing through music and fine arts” taken by school experts – Mrs. Neela Sarkar and Mr. Rana.
Students were also introduced and oriented to all the new subjects of class XI for eg. Political Science, Economics, Psychology, Home Science, Multi-Media etc.by the subject experts.
On the fifth day, students had a session on “Diet and Nutrition in Adolescents”. The session was taken by Mrs. Alka Madan. She oriented the students about the kind of diet they should eat and why.
The day ended with a visit to National Science Centre.
Sixth day,focussed on conventional and Non-conventional careers by Mrs. Pooja Dawar Rao followed by a session on “Leadership skills”by NIE expert Students discussed various leadership skills in the session. On the same day, students got a opportunity to meet children from Salam Balak Trust.
On the seventh day, students were sensitized to the lives of senior citizen by the visit to Old Age Home. It was coordinated by Help Age India.
Next day students saw a movie “A beautiful Mind” based on the true story of Mathematician and Nobel prize winner John Forbes Nash Jr. Next session was on “Save our environment” by Mrs Harleen Kaur, who highlighted on current environmental issues like global warming, climate change and green house effect.
Students were given a number of social issues on which they were suppose to present a role play, skit or Nukud Natak. Students made beautiful presentations on social issues. Director, Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan blessed the students on the valedictory function and exhorted them to work for the society as caring citizens. He congratulated the school for organizing such a resourceful camp and suggested students to remember and utilize what ever they have learnt during the camp. The best student participant award was bagged by Anchit Aggarwal.
The camp was planned and coordinated by Mrs. Neeru Nigam (Head, Social work Department ) , Mrs. Neeraj Chibber , Dr.Jyoti Dev Rishi (School Counseller, Mrs. Aradhana Gambhir and under the tutelage of school Principal Mrs. Rekha Sharma.
