BUFFALO, NY – The Canisius College Center for the Global Study of Religion will present “Kabir in Song,” on Tuesday, October 28 at 7:30 p.m. in the Regis Room of the Richard E. Winter Student Center. The evening, which is free and open to the public, is part of the center’s Conversations in Christ and Culture Lecture Series.
“Kabir in Song” is a musical performance aimed at introducing American audiences to the oral and written traditions of Kabir, a famous North Indian poet, mystic and radical social critic of the 15th century. Dr. Linda Hess, a Kabir scholar at Stanford University, will introduce the evening event, and provide narrative links and explanations throughout the musical program, which will be performed by Prahlad Singh Tipanya and Dr. Krishna Kant Shukla. Prahlad Singh Tipanya is a famous Kabir singer from the Malwa region of Madhya Pradesh. He will sing, along with accompanying artists, in Malwa’s distinctive regional folk style. Krishna Kant Shukla is a classical singer trained by Ali Akbar Khan. Shukla will perform in the style of Kumar Gandharva (1924-1992), one of the greatest Kabir singers of the 20th century.
