these are, I\u2019d rather not be told<br \/>\nNature is our mother, not to be bought and sold,<br \/>\nUnseen, In a clearing, I park my car, to witness,<br \/>\nNature clothed in raiment, silvery white and gold.<br \/>\nChipmunks and squirrels merrily playing,<br \/>\nAmidst many a snow\u2019s fold,<br \/>\nWhile the deer hoof away the snow and ice,<br \/>\nTo munch on roots , in the bitter cold<br \/>\nThe woodpecker taps away at the tree\u2019s bark,<br \/>\nWith a rhythm fast, determined, loud and bold,<br \/>\nAnd the fragrant, crisp wind softly whispers,<br \/>\nMelodies, some new and some old<br \/>\nEntranced, with gratitude, joy and awe,<br \/>\nI stand, the forest\u2019s pristine beauty to behold.<br \/>\n<a Dodge must think it strange,<br \/>\nTo stop outside any dwelling\u2019s range<br \/>\nAmidst frost covered trees, aside frozen lake,<br \/>\nIn the Apalachian mountain range.<br \/>\nAs I turn off the ignition,<br \/>\nShe, of her own volition,<br \/>\nGives her crankshaft a shake,<br \/>\nTo ask if there is some mistake<br \/>\nAnd the only other sound is the rat-tat-tat,<br \/>\nThat two woodpeckers make.<br \/>\nThe woods are alive with mystery and wonder,<br \/>\nBut threatened by human greed and plunder.<br \/>\nTheir beauty astounding and deep,<br \/>\nTheir secrets, ever to keep<br \/>\nFrom the greedy calculating mind,<br \/>\nRevealed only to the heart,<br \/>\nThat is loving, true and kind.<br \/>\nWilderness is majestic, dark and deep,<br \/>\nAnd, though I have no promises to keep,<br \/>\nI have some distance to go before I sleep<br \/>\nSome distance to go, before I sleep.<br \/>\n(I wrote this poem while living in solitude in the Apalachian Mountains in
