While teaching Physics and Astronomy as an assistant professor in upstate New York, Dr.\u00a0Shukla decided to leave academics and follow his heart and soul deep into the fathomless\u00a0waters of Indian Classisical Music. Having studied with great maestros like Srimati Laxmi\u00a0Shankar, Ustaad Ali Akbar Khan and Dr. Tapan Bhattacharya, he returned to India in 1994 to\u00a0explore the roots of Indian Classical Music in the great living oral folk traditions. His musical\u00a0search led him into remote villages in the Himalayan foothills, as well as far flung and difficult\u00a0to reach dwellings in the central plains. He has been particularly influenced by the songs of\u00a0Kabir, Gorakhnath and other nirguna bhakti poet-saints\u2014songs that have been sung as part of\u00a0a living oral tradition that is over 600 years old.<\/div>\n

Dr. Shukla\u2019s repertoire includes compositions of Tyagaraja, Tulsides, Surdas, Meera, Tukaram,\u00a0Purandardas and other poet-saints of India as well as the musicasl compositions of Sufi saints.\u00a0He has also been reserching, recording and performing the folk songs of rural northern India,\u00a0which, according to him, is an art form of unparalled beauty which is fast becoming extinct.<\/div>\n
